A walk around Azores' famous Furnas Lake

Your first adventure in the Azores starts at Furnas, a popular spot on São Miguel, known for its bubbling “Caldeiras” (mineral-rich geothermal polls) and their use for preparing a traditional stew in a hole in the ground heated by volcanic activity. This circular route will take you around the lake through the wonderful flora and fauna of the Island. The tall trees contrasting with the blooming flowers are the perfect environment to appreciate the calmness and tranquility of this place. Today you will visit the Gorreana Tea Factory, a unique place in Europe where you can learn more about tea culture on the Island.

After a short transfer, you will depart for the ascent of the Pico da Vara (the highest point of São Miguel Island at 1.105 m). These paths inserted in the Natural Forest Reserve were used in the past by the "elders" to access the forest where they produced charcoal and kept livestock. This is an area of extremely rich biodiversity and great importance for the recovery of the Laurissilva forest and the Azores Bullfinch, one of the few species of fauna endemic to the Azores. After the walk, you will visit the oldest tea plantation in Europe and discover the secrets of this wonderful product that kept its original traditions since 1983.

Today you will find one of the most beautiful and untouched lakes in Portugal - Lagoa do Fogo. Classified as a nature reserve, and located in the heart of the island, this will be an unforgettable experience filled with superb views. The trail begins in farm pastures and climbs through a forest of eucalyptus, pittosporum, and acacias, following a stream before reaching the shore of Lagoa do Fogo. Once there, the views over the entire lake and the surrounding slopes are magnificent. Enjoy the moment. The way back will cross places of great importance to the island, showing you part of its history.

After some free time to explore the most emblematic places of Ponta Delgada, a transfer will take you to the Serra da Devassa. Today's goal is to walk along with volcanic cones and small lakes integrated into a protected area, part of the Sete Cidades volcanic complex. The trail will take you through incredible hidden landscapes marked by dense forests on all sides. You will have the opportunity to see Lagoa do Canário, Lagoa Rasa, Caldeirão Grande, and Lagoa das Empadadas. This fantastic walk is sometimes accompanied by fog, which gives it a special atmosphere.
